Roasting coffee at home offers control over flavor and freshness, making it a rewarding hobby for coffee enthusiasts.
Owner and founder Jen Apodaca has been roasting beans since 2005 and launched the Mother Tongue brand in 2019. Apodaca is a certified Q-Grader, which requires passing a rigorous exam testing one's coffee tasting abilities, and is the former chair of the Coffee Roasters Guild of America. Apodaca also was the 2019 US Cup Tasters Champion, and won second place in the 2022 Roasters Championship.
"Luciano still roasts occasionally," Haas recently told Daily Coffee News. "He comes in in the mornings and will roast and will run the register. At 81 years young, he's certainly earned his retirement, but he's a fixture here."
Pitt had already purchased a Diedrich roaster and was looking for a partner to teach them about the roaster, to train them to roast and to help the team identify the coffees they would like to serve on campus.
