By Robert Jablon | Associated Press LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Unified School District and union leaders said Friday they reached a deal on pay raises for bus drivers, custodians and other support staff after a three-day strike that shut down the nation's second-largest school system.The deal includes a series of retroactive raises going back to 2021 that will collectively hike worker pay by about 30%, said Max Arias, executive director of SEIU Local 99.

Kelly Gonez and Rocio Rivas have declared victory in their races for seats on the Los Angeles Board of Education, elevating the influence of the teachers union as the school system navigates contract negotiations, recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and critical funding issues.In District 6, which covers most of the east San Fernando Valley, incumbent school board President Gonez had 51.27% of the vote through Tuesday compared with 48.73% for high school Spanish teacher Marvin Rodriguez.

Rocio Rivas has built on her lead over Maria Brenes in a close Los Angeles school board race to represent downtown, surrounding neighborhoods and the Eastside, according to an updated tally released Monday.In a second board race, for a seat representing the east San Fernando Valley, school board President Kelly Gonez has extended her advantage over challenger Marvin Rodriguez.

For 24 years, Peniana Arguelles has worked as a special education assistant in Los Angeles public schools.At Menlo Avenue Elementary School in South Los Angeles she feeds children who can't hold a fork, changes diapers, helps students choose colors for their paintings, doles out hugs when they cry.Arguelles said she considers herself blessed and "loves her job and her students."

As workers across the UK prepare for strike action over pay, it has emerged that 2022 has been the worst year for real wage growth in nearly half a century.Analysis of official statistics by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) found that real wages  the amount people earned in relation to their cost of living  fell by an average of 76 a month in 2022 as a result of pay not keeping pace with inflation.

Britain has been hit by a huge wave of industrial action this winter as members of multiple trade unions head to the picket lines arguing for improved wages and better working conditions.Train drivers, nurses, ambulance staff, civil servants, bus drivers and Border Force agents are among those who have downed tools and reached for their placards to campaign for fairer salaries amid soaring inflation rates and the cost of living crisis.

Conservative MP Lee Anderson has been accused by Labour of harassing his own staff member and using her as a political football in a row over food bank use.The Tory MP has repeatedly attracted controversy on the subject after he claimed that poor people only food banks them because cannot budget.Mr Anderson shared a photo of a office staff member called Katy to make his point saying she earned less than 30,000 and did not need to use a food bank.

Royal Mail workers will stage six more days of strike action in December, including on Christmas Eve, as part of the latest walkouts to affect the postal service.Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) at the service will go on strike on 9, 11, 14, 15, 23 and 24 December.Workers are already set to strike on 24, 25 and 30 November, as well as 1 December.
