In the 1960s, after protesting for the Free Speech Movement and marching through the streets of Berkeley in support of women's liberation, Laura started accumulating pamphlets, manifestos, posters and newspapers from the early days of feminism. The collection became so voluminous it morphed into the Women's History Research Center, with more than a million pieces of paper. Now microfilm of those archives is spread in libraries around the world.

"So much of the work from this era is playful, stylish and full of personality. Despite printing constraints, artists still found ways to create illustrations full of wit and charm," says Zara. "The cheerful optimism and embrace of character, combined with individuality and modernist values, led to impactful, vibrant designs that still resonate today. According to the illustrator, its influence may be much more far reaching than we think: "Even illustrators who've never seen these originals are working in traditions these artists established."

My footsteps echo across the floors of a gallery that seems nearly empty of people or art. Yet as I wander the gallery, I am mirrored by swarms of people that seem to flurry across the walls. From behind the glass of orderly, and often rather small, black and white photos, jubilant masses rush towards me arms raised, sometimes alongside grim-faced placard-carrying companions, while in others children play amidst rubble, friends embrace, and couples kiss.

In an era when contemporary culture tends to privilege immediacy, the archive offers resistance by inviting slowness, friction, and a longer view. In this three-part series, Document turns to curators Ruba Katrib, Jovanna Venegas, and Drew Sawyer, photographed on location, wearing Vowels, the brand that finds its own voice through archival research. Each of these curators places the archive at the center of their practice.

Rosie Grant has always been familiar with death. Parents who led ghost tours, coupled with cutting through a cemetery on her route home from high school, helped her feel relatively comfortable with the topic. What she wasn't so familiar with were the recipes that found new life in death. In her new cookbook, "To Die For: A Cookbook of Gravestone Recipes," the L.A.-based archivist and social media personality dives into the world of tombstones etched with recipes that the deceased loved in life: a fan-favorite Texas sheet cake from a beautician, snickerdoodle cookies that helped feed California firefighters, guava cobbler that scented a Florida neighborhood. Grant is now sharing these recipes and the stories of those who made them in life.

The Center for Curatorial Studies (CCS) at Bard College in Upstate New York will open the doors to its library and archives facility's new Keith Haring Wing next month. The two-storey masonry structure adds 12,000 sq. ft to the CCS Library and Archives, more than doubling the existing capacity. The expansion was supported by a $10m capital campaign, and is named in recognition of a $3m gift from the Keith Haring Foundation.

"Asian American history is oftentimes invisible, given the population and the history. It's pushed to the margins. That's also reflected in the archives."
