By March, plans call for shuttering over a dozen buildings and more than 100 labs at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. The center's largest library was closed last month, putting important, undigitized historical documents at risk of being discarded. Agency officials describe the action as following a 2022 master plan and have labeled it a "consolidation, not a closure," while offering a 60-day review to maintain researcher access. GFSC staff reported the closures as rushed and disorganized with no clear replacement plan for key spaces. The move coincides with proposed major cuts to NASA's science directorate in the 2026 budget.
