Boathouse Zaka, a 25.5-square-meter timber structure revitalized by OFIS Architects, showcases an innovative rooftop filtration garden. This garden, consisting of wooden trays with layers of stone, gravel, sand, and soil, filters lake water while irrigating native alpine flowers, functioning as both a scientific experiment and an educational tool. The building retains its original timber frame and cladding, enhancing local craft traditions with a semi-transparent façade that serves as a breathable interface. The facility also provides storage for research boats dedicated to monitoring Lake Bled's environmental health amidst increasing tourism and climate challenges.
The project introduces an experimental rooftop filtration garden, turning the boathouse into both a scientific facility and an educational device.
Lake water is pumped through this substrate, slowly filtering as it irrigates the vegetation, mimicking natural water purification processes.
This semi-transparent cladding filters light, air, and views, allowing the structure to become 'a filter rather than a wall'.
Boathouse Zaka stores two research boats used for environmental monitoring of Lake Bled, whose crystal-clear and heavily visited waters require continuous observation.
