At the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, Uzbekistanâs pavilion showcases the Sun Institute of Material Science, known as the Heliocomplex. Curated by Ekaterina Golovatyuk and Giacomo Cantoni, the exhibition titled A Matter of Radiance focuses on the building's complex identity, reflecting both its historical significance and potential for sustainable innovation. By challenging conventional preservation narratives, the pavilion invites viewers to consider the Heliocomplexâs future role in cultural inquiry and ecological solutions. This dual narrative is depicted through fragments and conceptual interpretations, underlining the importance of maintaining modernist heritage while embracing a sustainable future.
As Golovatyuk states, 'We decided to decline the conventional narrative of preservation and instead intersect it with one of sustainability. The Heliocomplex allowed us to speak about both.'
The Heliocomplex's identity is not fixed, but is suspended between sustainability and entropy, its scientific roots revitalized through poetic, social expressions.
