SANU Second Home, a project by Furuya Design, transforms a wooden bungalow on Amami Ōshima into a seamless integration with the subtropical landscape. Located in Tatsugo Town, the home features thickened exterior walls forming a double-skin facade that improves visual presence and performance. The design emphasizes spatial relationships and atmospheric immersion with a new attic-level viewpoint, providing a visual connection to the coastline and enhancing the residents’ sensory experience. The interior features a double-height atrium that links living spaces with the elevated viewpoint, creating an expansive feel.
Furuya Design introduced thickened, expressive exterior walls to its SANU Home. These new elements form a double-skin facade that integrates existing components and enhances performance.
The outer skin, clad in wood, echoes the layered, fibrous textures of nearby fan palms, creating dappled shadows throughout the day.
A key move involved raising a new attic-level viewpoint to establish a visual and acoustic relationship with the coastline, allowing residents to enjoy the inner sea.
The central gesture inside SANU Home is a vertical expansion of space, revealing a double-height atrium that links the attic-level viewpoint to the living areas.
