Construction of a new tower above Southwark tube station to start next spring

Construction on two residential towers above Southwark tube station is scheduled to begin in Spring 2026 and is expected to complete in 2028. The development will replace a previous office scheme and includes a Bauhaus-inspired block for student accommodation and a council-managed social housing block. The joint venture behind the project is comprised of Places for London and Helical. Preparatory works are already ongoing, contributing to some weekend closures of Southwark tube station. The final project will feature 429 student studio apartments and 44 family-sized council homes.
The development will feature a new Bauhaus-inspired block, which will be leased as student accommodation, and a separate council-managed social housing block.
The oversite development will offer 429 studio apartments for students and an adjacent nine-storey building comprising 44 council homes in a mix of family-sized units.
