Bureau Tempo and Thom Fougere Collaborate on a Stunning Pine Island Cottage in Ontario
Briefly

The article highlights a stunning vacation home designed by Adam Robinson and Thom Fougere on Pine Island, Ontario. The architects incorporated natural materials such as fieldstone and wood to create a harmonious space that reflects the island's rugged beauty. Their design philosophy emphasizes a connection to nature, aiming to evoke the feeling of the natural landscape inside the home. Key features include a fieldstone island in the kitchen and textured Eramosa stone stairs, enhancing the home's organic aesthetic while ensuring it ages gracefully over time.
We wanted to capture the feeling of the stone under foot when walking barefoot on the island—something we had the pleasure of doing while touring the property before the cottage was built. The intention here is to reconnect with nature, not distance oneself from it.
By torching the locally quarried Eramosa stone, we were able to achieve a textured topography that closely resembled the naturally weathered stone outside.
Our client was happy to embrace the natural aging of raw materials throughout the interior, so the stone is untreated and will register its use over the years.
