The Xixi Goldmye Bookstore transforms an old office building in Hangzhou's wetlands into a vibrant space due to innovative renovation by Atelier Wen'Arch. The design incorporates bare concrete columns and unique "book beams" of laminated pine timber, which provide rhythm and functionality while framing views of the wetland. Notable features include the Book Tower, which offers stacked mezzanine reading areas without losing visual continuity, and a waterside pavilion designed for readers to enjoy nature. The project exemplifies a successful blend of architecture with the surrounding landscape.
The transformation required dismantling the existing roof and wall systems completely, showcasing innovative renovation that breathes new life into forgotten architecture.
The "book beams" define the space, where laminated pine timber elements intersect with original concrete columns, creating rhythm and integrating infrastructure into architectural poetry.
The Book Tower rises at the southwest corner, featuring stacked mezzanines wrapped around concealed steel I-beams, creating intimate reading spaces while maintaining visual connection.
The waterside pavilion engages directly with the wetland through sloped roofs and recessed seating, allowing readers to enjoy nature while immersed in their books.
