What Happens When You Hire Two Friends to Renovate and Decorate Your Apartment?
"Together with Powell, a seasoned steward of historic Big Apple residences, and Clem, an exuberant mix master, Tanzilli made careful tweaks to the layout and materials. A grid of handcrafted square tiles in an emerald hue now cocoons the bathroom (walls, ceiling, floor, and vanity) where they replaced the existing tub with a walk-in shower. The new kitchen, meanwhile, juxtaposes terrazzo floor tiles and countertops with white-oak cabinetry, floating shelves, and wall panels that wrap the space inside and out, setting it off as a sculptural volume."
"Tanzilli, cofounder of Third Eye, had been living in the building, a postwar redbrick complex, since 2009. But he had outgrown his studio, which was tight for just him, let alone him and his longtime boyfriend, Ryan Maerz, CEO of the popular catering company Canard Inc. So he pounced at the chance to buy a proper one-bedroom for them to share-never mind the dated kitchen, drab bath, and dreary surfaces."
""Ryan owns a catering company, and I love to have parties," notes Tanzilli."
Dan Tanzilli purchased a Chelsea one-bedroom to share with his boyfriend and engaged architect Jon Powell and interior designer Bachman Brown Clem for a renovation. The team adjusted the layout to improve flow and relocated the kitchen door to gain counter space and better connect daily routines. The bathroom was transformed with handcrafted emerald square tiles on walls, ceiling, floor, and vanity and a replaced tub with a walk-in shower. The kitchen combines terrazzo floors and countertops with white-oak cabinetry, floating shelves, and wraparound wall panels that create a sculptural volume suited to entertaining.
