The Tragedy of Living a Lie
"Secrets create a barrier to receiving love as kind words land with a hollow twinge of doubt."
Secrets create a barrier to receiving love as kind words land with a hollow twinge of doubt. The person holding a secret often suffers more than anyone around them realizes. Disclosure is never easy, but it is the only path to being fully known and fully loved. There are times when taking a secret to the grave is understandable. As a mental health clinician, confidentiality shapes how disclosures are received, and compassion can be separated from moral judgment. People often rehearse confession or exposure with imagined condemnation, disgust, and silence, while still fearing that acceptance may be another form of judgment. When secrets are revealed, compassion often shifts toward the victims who were lied to and must face both betrayal and the substance of what was hidden.
