As I discovered new terms and new ways to attempt to describe what was going on, I was young and trying to find my footing, making a few mistakes along the way.
Finally, I found the right one - asexuality. I was the textbook definition of asexual. I had that clichéd lightbulb moment where my identity and my life burst into clarity.
I was met with incredulous looks and quiet laughter; I felt I had to give them a masterclass in being asexual, hoping they'd understand.
But the jokes kept on coming, so I gave up, retreated, and lost a few friends in the process, highlighting the challenges of being asexual in a largely misunderstood community.
