The deceptively-named A Detective Story has almost nothing to do with the conventions of its titular genre, focusing more on character relationships than solving a mystery.
The lead character, our Bay Area gumshoe, investigates the disappearance of a blonde woman, her obsession propelled by a love for detective literature.
The play reveals relationship complications among the characters, particularly the rifts that develop rather than concentrating solely on the mystery of the missing woman.
While the show presents initial detective story rules, it quickly veers away from them, instead exploring passion and personal connections between the characters.
