I grew up in a farming family in Co Waterford in the 1970s. My earliest recollection of money was realising that you needed money to trade for sweets.
Yes, for all of my teens, and for my 20s, and for much of my 30s too. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, as most of my generation will understand, pocket money came from working.
I was very slow to ever ask my parents for money. In my early 20s, I was working in London as a management trainee and my salary just covered the essentials.
I then relaxed for a few years until the boys went to college and my resources went into freefall. I have just about recovered!
