John Farnham, in his memoir 'The Voice Inside', reveals alarming details about his abusive relationship with former manager Darryl Sambell, highlighting years of emotional, sexual, and physical abuse. He describes Sambell's aggression and controlling tendencies, emphasizing how these experiences have shaped his life.
Farnham recalls incidents of sexual aggression, stating, 'At times, in the early years, he was aggressively sexual with me...I said it often enough that I can see now that this rejection turned his attraction into jealousy, hatred and a desire for control.'
Reflecting on his isolation, Farnham mentions, 'He controlled where and when I worked, what I sang, what I wore, what I ate...he drugged me, and he made me believe that all my success...was because of him.'
He shares a haunting realization, saying, 'I still feel so ashamed of myself for not realizing what Darryl was up to...I put it down to being young, under stress, tired and feeling unsure and insecure about my own instincts.'
