In Sacramento, caregivers for loved ones with Alzheimer's or dementia find solace and emotional release through poetry, led by Frances Kakugawa. Her belief is that caregiving can inspire creative expression, allowing caregivers to process their experiences meaningfully. With an increasing number of unpaid caregivers in California, Kakugawa emphasizes how poetry can be an outlet for emotional burdens. After her husband's passing, Mike Smith reflects on his mother's poems, revealing the depth of emotion and understanding behind caregiving. This creative avenue offers a sense of continuity and connection between loved ones.
"They're able to process that through poetry, and become the kind of caregiver that is needed," Kakugawa said.
"There is so much of her in this house. Everything I look at reminds me of her - and of him,... learn what was going on in her mind." Smith said.
