In a recent InfoQ podcast, Avraham Poupko discussed the evolving role of AI in software architecture. He emphasized that AI won't replace architects; rather, architects proficient in AI will excel. Poupko noted that while it's uncertain how the profession may evolve long-term, those who adeptly integrate AI tools into their workflows will outperform others. His insights stemmed from a recent talk at the iSAQB Software Architecture Gathering, where he explored the collaboration between AI and architects, highlighting AI's role as a powerful tool rather than a replacement.
Architects will be replaced by other architects, those who know how to make good use of AI and LLM, at least in the near term.
It’s not safe to predict the long term; the profession of a software architect may not even exist. Craftsmen who use their skills and tools effectively will prevail.
AI is a very impressive tool for software architects but remains just that—a tool. Its use boils down to how effectively it is employed by architects.
Deciding what not to say was the hardest part of my talk on AI's role in software architecture, indicating the depth of learning I experienced during my preparation.
