"I'm born into a family of addicts and alcoholics, and I am sober myself so that's what I end up writing about," Mellors tells Bustle. In her latest novel, Blue Sisters, she explores the various manifestations of addiction within a family, highlighting how it touches each sister's life distinctly.
"Addiction looks different in different people. Even in one family it can manifest differently, but no one gets out unscathed," Mellors says. This statement encapsulates the personal and shared struggles faced by families dealing with substance abuse, demonstrating the complexity of love intertwined with addiction.
"My sister is the one person on earth who I would die for, but I have also wanted to actually kill," she laughs. This quote illustrates the intense, contradictory emotions that come with familial relationships, especially in the context of rivalry and unconditional love.
