This underscores how 'founder mode' might merely be a rebrand for micromanagement.
The players (Sourceforge, Google Code, etc) who eventually did care, after seeing Git and GitHub rising in popularity, simply had no taste. They could never have competed with a developer tools company whose cofounders were all product-focused open source software developers. This highlights GitHub's market edge derived from its foundational focus and developer-centric approach.
There's nothing glamorous about being a designer at a startup. It's a role that frequently values speed and pragmatism over going deep in the craft. It's not all big launches, viral tweets, building for happy paths, and clear-cut product requirements. This serves as a reminder of the often ruthless and chaotic reality of design work in startup settings.
