Xbox Game Pass Price Cut Is Working, CEO Says
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma cut the price of Xbox Game Pass and reported early results in a staff memo. Growth slowed and subscriber loss accelerated after prior pricing and SKU changes, but the new price reduction coincided with acquisitions increasing and retention improving. Sharma said Game Pass still faces a challenging path and that durable growth will require sustained effort rather than a single launch. The next evolution of Game Pass launched with Discord Nitro members receiving a starter version at no extra charge. Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said he and Sharma have discussed subscription bundle ideas involving Netflix and Xbox, with no confirmation yet.
"“Growth slowed down and subscriber loss accelerated after the pricing and SKU changes last year. Since our price reduction we have seen acquisitions grow and retention improve, which is a good first step.”"
"“We will not solve this in one moment or one launch. We will have to outwork the problem in front of us in our path to restore durable growth.”"
"“You would have to do it in a way that works for the consumer and works for both companies, and frankly, I think Microsoft's still trying to figure out how to make the Game Pass bundle work for Microsoft. But what I like about Asha's thinking is, it's all about, 'How do we do more?' And it's already been exciting to watch.”"
"“We are building a stronger XBOX”"
