Warner Bros Discovery has announced significant reductions to its gaming division, including the closing of Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB Games San Diego. This decision comes in the wake of a lackluster 2024 for the company. Monolith, notable for its Lord of the Rings games, was developing a Wonder Woman project utilizing its acclaimed Nemesis system. Future focus will pivot towards the Harry Potter franchise, Mortal Kombat, DC universe, and Game of Thrones, in line with a strategy emphasizing fewer, more substantial franchises.
According to an internal memo from JB Perrette, the company's CEO and president of global streaming and games, Warner Bros Discovery is making significant cuts to its games division in response to a "disappointing 2024".
WB's gaming efforts will now focus on four key properties: Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, the DC universe, and Game of Thrones, reflecting a shift towards a 'fewer but bigger franchises' strategy.
