Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is set for release in 2025 on major platforms. Sandfall Interactive switched from Unreal Engine 4 to the new UE5, which greatly improved character creation and graphics. CTO Tom Guillermin praised features like Lumen for dynamic lighting and Metahuman for high-fidelity character design. Despite early challenges with Metahuman's limitations, the tool has improved significantly since its launch. UE5's asset library enables smaller studios to achieve high-quality visuals that were previously attainable only by larger studios.

We were excited to have a way to create super-high-fidelity characters, but switching from Character Creator to Metahuman had initial challenges.
The performance capture can be integrated with so much fidelity, and Metahuman has come on leaps and bounds since its introduction.
Unreal Engine 5 has allowed us to punch above our weight, providing a library of assets and the ability to display virtually infinite polygons.
