Romero Games Faces Closure Amid Xbox Funding Cuts, Cancels In-Development Shooter And Lays Off Staff
Briefly

Microsoft's recent layoffs have significantly affected the Xbox brand and led to funding cuts for Romero Games, co-founded by John Romero. The game studio announced the cancellation of its in-development shooter due to the loss of support from its publishing partner. Employees confirmed on LinkedIn that the layoffs at Xbox directly impacted their jobs as well. Concerns have been raised about the potential closure of Romero Games, although the studio has not officially announced this and is currently evaluating its next steps to support its team.
"The mass Microsoft layoff effectively cancelled funding for Romero Games and as a result the whole team was laid off," said UI artist Ana Mitrovic on LinkedIn.
"This was a strategic decision made at a high level within the publisher, well above our visibility or control," Romero said. "We deeply wish there had been something, anything, we could have done to prevent this outcome."
Former employees, including Sadbh Flanagan and Eric Wong, expressed concerns about the studio closing in their social media posts.
The cancellation of the in-development shooter at Romero Games was directly linked to funding cuts from Microsoft, affecting several projects at other studios.
