Nintendo has defended its pricing strategy for the Switch 2 and Mario Kart World following public scrutiny. President Doug Bowser clarified that the recent US tariffs did not influence the $449.99 price of the Switch 2, which features significant improvements over its predecessor. Bowser also described the $79.99 price of Mario Kart World as a reflection of its development complexity and gameplay value, stating that Nintendo considers the overall experience when determining game prices, highlighting the variability due to production efforts and gameplay depth.
"Put [the April 2nd announcement] aside. Any previous tariffs were not factored into the price itself," the exec said, adding that Nintendo is "actively assessing what the impact may be".
"We'll look at each game, really look at the development that's gone into the game, the breadth and depth of the gameplay, if you will..."
The fresh US tariffs have delayed pre-orders, and Bowser acknowledged that the Switch 2's features justify its price beyond just currency factors.
Bowser emphasized that MKW's pricing reflects the quality and development effort, noting it's higher due to its unique gameplay experiences.
