Consumer advocate Alex Neil has initiated a £5 billion lawsuit against Sony, alleging the company overcharged UK customers for digital games and in-game purchases from August 2016 to August 2022. The lawsuit claims Sony exploited its market position, benefiting from a near-monopoly on digital game sales through the PlayStation Store, thus enforcing unfair pricing conditions. Eligible PlayStation owners could receive between £67 and £562 if the claim is successful, and compensation will be automatically awarded without requiring individual claims.
Essentially, since at least 19 August 2016, we believe that Sony has been exploiting its UK customers, by charging them too much for PlayStation digital games and in-game content.
While companies making a profit isn't wrong, unlawful behaviour at the expense of their customers is.
Sony used its near monopoly on the sale of digital games and add-on content... to enforce strict terms and conditions leading to excessive and unfair prices to consumers.
If you owned a PlayStation console between August 19, 2016 and August 19, 2022 and purchased a digital game or in-game content, you are entitled to participate in the claim.
