Fortnite Can Start Hosting Standalone Games Next Year
"Epic Games is teaming up with Unity to support the popular game engine within Fortnite. Eventually, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said, this partnership will allow "all Unity games" to be published within Fortnite. That means even games that weren't designed for Fortnite should work, and this move could pave the way for Epic to fully incorporate Fall Guys into Fortnite."
"This is major news for developers, who will be able to make things for Fortnite without using Epic's tools and may be able to import their existing games into Fortnite as well. And with the recent news that Epic will allow Creative maps to sell things for V-Bucks, these Unity devs might actually be able to sell their games in Fortnite."
Epic Games and Unity are partnering to allow Unity-developed games to be published directly into Fortnite and appear in Fortnite's discovery system. Starting next year, Unity developers can participate in Fortnite's economy as it evolves toward an open metaverse connecting all users and engines. Developers will be able to create for Fortnite without using Epic's tools and may import existing Unity games into Fortnite. Recent changes permitting Creative maps to sell items for V-Bucks create an avenue for Unity creators to monetize within Fortnite. The partnership raises the possibility of integrating Unity-based titles like Fall Guys into Fortnite. More details will follow next year.
