Divinity Will Likely Be An Early Access Game, Just Like Baldur's Gate 3
"We still want to do early access."
"It's been the blueprint, especially the community participation with early access, which is what interests us. It was [with] Divinity: Original Sin 1, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Baldur's Gate 3--they [the community members] were a large part of how we developed the games," he said."
"Players being invested in it increases the pressure and their participation in it, so you get something really cool out of that process--even if it's painful for the developer," he said. So, we have to swallow our pride and say, 'Ok, you guys are right, we're wrong, we accept it, you've made your point.'"
Larian plans to use early access for the upcoming Divinity game, following the development blueprint used on Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2 and Baldur's Gate 3. Community participation during early access contributed significantly to development decisions and improvements, increasing player investment and developer workload. Early access requires extra development effort but is believed to produce better games. Baldur's Gate 3 launched its first act in early access in August 2020, expanded over time, and reached full release in August 2023, selling over 20 million copies. The new Divinity title will use generative AI to free developers from routine tasks, though at least one former developer criticized that AI use.
