When I went on maternity leave, I entered this landscape of data-driven design with eyes wide open - aware that my data was being captured and likely used in ways I couldn't fully control.
The ethical failings of platforms like Facebook are well-documented. In 2012 they infamously disregarded collecting consent before conducting psychological experiments on their user base.
As I relied more heavily on technology to ease the anxieties of new motherhood, I felt a growing moral responsibility to consider the potential harm of bad design.
When used responsibly, my data creates meaningful, personalized experiences that I welcome. But during my maternity leave, I became more aware of technology's darker side.
