Shane Tamura, a former high-school football player, killed four people in a Manhattan office building before taking his own life. A note found on his body mentioned chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which he speculated might be linked to his mental illness. CTE is increasingly associated with professional football, and concerns have been raised regarding the lack of research on the effects of high-school football. The NFL faced a lawsuit from former players for concealing brain injury risks, including CTE, confirming the need for further investigation into related mental health issues.
The concerns about CTE and football have been mounting for more than two decades. In 2013, the NFL settled a lawsuit with over 4,500 former players who claimed the league concealed risks of brain injury, including CTE.
Tamura reported in his note that he speculated CTE might have caused his mental illness. While it's too early for medical examiners to provide a diagnosis, autopsies could reveal anomalies, yet these wouldn't explain the motives for his actions.
