Federal funds should be allocated toward essential scientific research, as stated by OSTP Director Michael Kratsios. In his speech at the National Academy of Sciences, he pointed out that increased federal investment has not led to significant breakthroughs. He criticized the current approach to funding, advocating for a reset in spending priorities, particularly against the backdrop of cuts to programs perceived as promoting diversity initiatives. Kratsios warned that these cuts could harm the diversity of thought in science, which he deems essential for quality research and breakthrough innovations.
Spending more money on the wrong things is far worse than spending less money on the right things, Kratsios said.
Kratsios emphasized that DEI initiatives degrade our scientific enterprise and threaten the real diversity of thought foundational to the scientific community.
