"On September 16, Trump's Department of Education sent a letter to New York City Public Schools outlining six demands that explicitly targeted trans and queer students. Among them: banning recognition of transgender students' gender identities, barring them from bathrooms and sports, and mandating discriminatory treatment in overnight accommodations. The letter threatened to withhold $47 million in federal grant funding if the city did not comply by the end of the month."
Some elite universities and hospitals acceded to federal demands to ban or exclude transgender students and staff under threats to federal funding. Local school boards have resisted similar federal pressure, refusing to remove protections for transgender students despite threats to funding. New York City Public Schools, the nation's largest system, received a September 16 Department of Education letter demanding six measures targeting trans and queer students, including bans on recognition, restroom and sports access, and discriminatory overnight housing rules. The Department threatened to withhold $47 million if the district did not comply. New York City refused and filed a lawsuit challenging the withholding of funds.
