"I want to thank you for stepping up to the plate and being part of our safety and security in Nassau County," Blakeman said. He emphasized that the special deputies will enhance the county's emergency response capabilities, particularly during crises like terrorist attacks or natural disasters.
"The number one job of a public official is public safety, public health, and public welfare," Blakeman remarked, underscoring the importance of maintaining safety amidst growing concerns over potential emergencies.
Blakeman defended the program against criticism, stating, "We're not scrambling if there's an emergency." He clarified that the special deputies will support, not replace, current law enforcement and emergency services.
"I hope and pray I never have to activate you," he told the newly sworn-in deputies, conveying both a sense of responsibility and the hope that their services would not need to be called upon.
