Give in or escalate? What to expect as Trump warns Iran DW 03/18/2025
Briefly

In a strong statement, President Trump urged Iran to stop backing the Houthi rebels in Yemen, emphasizing that Tehran would be held responsible for any attacks by the militia. The Houthis, a Shiite Muslim group backed by Iran, have been active in Yemen's civil war since 2014 and control key areas including the capital. Experts note the strategic importance of the Houthis as Iran's proxy in the region, linking their activities to broader tensions with the US and Israel amid escalating violence in response to conflicts in Gaza.
"Every shot fired by the Houthis will be looked upon, from this point forward, as being a shot fired from the weapons and leadership of IRAN, and IRAN will be held responsible, and suffer the consequences, and those consequences will be dire!"
"Alongside pro-Iranian groups in Iraq, the Houthi rebels are one of Iran's last active proxy groups in the region," said Hamidreza Azizi, an Iran expert at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP).
"In their eyes, Tehran would lose its strategic counterweight against the US in the event of a military defeat of the Houthis. And the next stop could be a direct attack on Iran."
