Jimmy Lai, a prominent Hong Kong media publisher and political prisoner, has endured over 1,500 days in solitary confinement. Once a successful businessman, Lai transitioned to journalism after the Tiananmen massacre, establishing a major pro-democracy media outlet. His arrest in 2020 marked a significant crackdown on freedom of expression. A devout Catholic, Lai has been denied Mass during his imprisonment. The international community, especially Americans, are called upon to advocate for his immediate release to honor his contributions to democracy and free speech in Hong Kong.
Lai is a 77-year-old British citizen who ran the most outspoken pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong - until 2020, when its authorities threw him in jail for his full-throated defense of freedom.
His newspaper and magazine empire quickly became the most important independent Chinese-language media group in the world, employing 4,000 people in Hong Kong and in newly democratic Taiwan.
