"Hallucinations are a well-known issue for all LLMs, which we disclose and work hard to minimise, Castaneda said. But as everyone knows, if you're creative enough, you can prompt a chatbot to say something misleading. Starbuck is best known for opposing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. No one regardless of political beliefs should ever experience this, he said in a statement about the lawsuit. Now is the time for all of us to demand transparent, unbiased AI that cannot be weaponized to harm people."
Robby Starbuck sued Google in Delaware state court alleging its AI systems falsely generated and disseminated extreme defamatory claims about him, including accusations of child rape, serial sexual abuse, shooting, spousal abuse, attendance at the January 6 riot, and ties to white nationalist Richard Spencer. The complaint states Bard cited fabricated sources and that Google failed to address the statements after Starbuck contacted the company. The suit also alleges Google's Gemma chatbot spread false sexual-assault allegations based on fictitious sources. Google attributed many claims to hallucinations from Bard and said it worked to mitigate such errors in 2023. Starbuck previously sued and settled with Meta.
