Colby Hall, a founding editor at Mediaite, discuses the cancellation of Hamilton performances at the Kennedy Center in protest of President Trump’s influence over the center. Producer Jeffrey Seller stated that participation would violate their conscience amidst the new cultural climate. Hall argues that the protest aligns with free speech, while cautioning that the real victims are theater fans rather than Trump. He believes art is inherently political and cannot remain neutral, supporting the idea that such protests spark necessary conversations.
Our show simply cannot, in good conscience, participate and be a part of this new culture that is being imposed on the Kennedy Center, Jeffrey Seller said.
The people that are actually going to be punished by this is no one in the Trump administration and not Trump. It's the musical theater fans in the D.C. area.
It's a protest that's consistent with free speech and constitutional values and long-standing conservative values. It's a free market.
I don't think art is necessarily apolitical, right? I think, you know, if you look at most art, it's often sort of come from the underground.
