The authorities found the body of the woman, Elizabeth Pollard, about 30 feet below the surface on Friday morning after they used an excavator to dig into the sinkhole in Unity Township, Pa., Trooper Steve Limani of the Pennsylvania State Police said.
Mr. Carson said it's a very, very sad case, highlighting the intense effort that involved more than 140 people searching over four days for Ms. Pollard.
After two days of rescue efforts, Ms. Pollard was presumed dead, and the confirmation devastated those who knew her. Her son noted the family's hope to find her alive.
He added, "I am more happy that they found her, but not in the condition we were hoping for," expressing the family's grief over the tragic conclusion.
