Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish Fulbright doctoral student at Tufts University, has been released from immigration detention after over six weeks. Her detention, deemed politically motivated by her lawyers, followed her co-authorship of an opinion piece criticizing Israel's actions in Gaza. A federal judge mandated her release as she claimed her detention was illegal. Ozturk expressed gratitude for the support she received and reflected on the challenges faced during her time in detention, which impacted her academic progress significantly.
In the last 45 days, I lost both my freedom and also my education during a crucial time for my doctoral studies, she said. But I am so grateful for all the support, kindness and care.
Supporters believe Ozturk, a Fulbright scholar from Turkiye, was targeted for having co-written an opinion article in her student newspaper, calling on Tufts University to acknowledge Israel's war on Gaza as a genocide.
