Many residents still have no power or cell signals or running water, even as a wave of aid flowed in over recent days. The extent of destruction in Swannanoa, N.C., reflects the terrible impact of Hurricane Helene, a storm that has claimed over 200 lives and left entire towns in ruins.
I arrived in Boone late Thursday, Sept. 26, before the brunt of the storm, and set out amid heavy rain and moderate winds at first light. As I approached the site of water rescues, I observed the violent scene where water was gushing over the local highway, making it impossible to get closer.
