A federal judge ruled in favor of Mariah Carey, stating she did not infringe on the copyright of a 1989 song sharing the same title. The lawsuit, filed by songwriters Andy Stone and Troy Powers, claimed Carey's 1994 holiday hit borrowed significant elements from their work. However, Judge Mónica Ramírez Almadani determined that the plaintiffs did not satisfactorily demonstrate that the two songs were substantially similar, and highlighted that common Christmas themes were utilized differently in Carey's song. The plaintiffs are considering an appeal.
In her ruling, Judge Mónica Ramírez Almadani stated that the plaintiffs failed to demonstrate that "All I Want for Christmas Is You" and their song were substantially similar.
Carey and co-writer Walter Afanasieff celebrated their victory, as the judge granted Carey's request for summary judgment, preventing the case from going to trial.
