Maureen Futtner experienced an unexpected loss with her sister's death. Attending a business event was challenging, but she made an effort to appear composed. While on a crowded train, she offered her seat to a visually impaired woman. In an unusual exchange, they connected as the woman inquired about Futtner's day. Futtner shared her sorrow about her sister's passing, to which the woman empathized by recounting her own loss. Their brief interaction offered solace and understanding amid their shared grief.

This isn't something people generally do on BART. But in that moment, something in me knew I just had to be honest.
'Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that,' the woman responded. I know how painful losing a loved one is.
I had more to say to this woman. I wanted to let her know how bereft I would be if I lost my wife, who's my rock.
