The Zane Grey Estate, a Mediterranean Revival home of the famed novelist, was severely damaged in the Eaton Fire. The property, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is now a challenge for owners Nathaniel Grouille and Alice Carr as they consider rebuilding it. They aim to preserve Grey's legacy without replicating the original aesthetics due to the lack of quality materials available today. They wish to avoid modern substitutes that don't honor the unique character of the home, which reflected Grey's interests in the Old West and Southwest environments.
"This structure was incredibly unique, using really high quality old-growth wood and products that just don't exist today," Carr said, illuminating the original design's unmatched quality.
"You can see the white stencils made it through the fire, even though the paint itself is gone," said Alice Carr, highlighting the remnants of Zane Grey's artistic interests after the fire.
