Iraq will impose a two-day curfew in November for the country's first census in 27 years. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced this significant decision recently.
Ravaged by decades of conflict and violence, Iraq has postponed a census several times, most notably in 2010 due to tensions over disputed territories, leaving demographics unrecorded.
The initiative plays a crucial role in equipping Iraq with accurate demographic information, facilitating effective policymaking, and promoting inclusive growth, according to the UNFPA.
With a current population estimate of about 43 million, the census aims to recover the historical pattern of conducting each count every decade.
