UK unions welcome moves to bolster workers' rights bill
Briefly

Trade unions are celebrating victory as Labour's employment rights bill takes crucial steps towards strengthening worker protections. Despite opposition from business groups, key measures remain intact, including day-one rights against unfair dismissal for 9 million workers and enhanced rights for 1 million low-paid workers on zero-hour contracts. The bill also introduces new parental leave rights. Union leaders commend the government for listening to workers' concerns and providing additional protections, marking a significant shift in prioritizing workers' rights after years of neglect in this area.
The government confirmed it was not proceeding with any legal guarantees on the right to switch off, which had not been in the original bill.
For decades, workers' rights have been pushed down the agenda. This is the first time in a generation that workers' rights have been taken seriously.
Union sources said they were delighted there had been no watering down of any key measures in the employment rights bill.
Unite, whose leadership has been deeply critical of Keir Starmer and had previously accused the government of watering down the bill, said the government had listened.
