The housing situation in the country remains dire, leading to significant changes in Rent Pressure Zones (RPZs). Housing Minister James Browne announced an extension of RPZs while allowing landlords of new apartments to increase rents in line with inflation. This decision stems from a dramatic decrease in apartment construction, with a drop from 1,816 commencements last year to just 160 this year. While Taoiseach Micheál Martin aims to provide policy certainty and renter protection, opposition parties express concerns, questioning the effectiveness of these measures in ensuring affordable housing.
The involvement of the State is enormous. It has to be balanced and supplemented with significant private sector investment, Mr. Martin said, as €20bn is needed.
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald said it was effectively the 'death knell of Rent Pressure Zones', reflecting dissatisfaction with the new changes to rent policies.
