MPs back one-month cap on advance rent payments
Briefly

Housing minister Matthew Pennycook stated in the Commons that the government aims to prevent landlords from demanding large advanced rent payments that can reach up to 12 months of rent. This cap is intended to help "tenants who are perfectly able to afford the monthly rent" but often face demands for exorbitant sums in advance to secure a rental agreement. The government believes this clause in the Renters' Rights Bill is a crucial step toward protecting tenant rights.
Independent MP Jeremy Corbyn raised concerns that tenants are facing evictions before the expected package of protections from the Renters' Rights Bill can be enacted. He highlighted the urgency of instituting measures to prevent "no-fault" evictions, emphasizing that vulnerable tenants need immediate safeguards while they navigate the rental landscape, which can lead to severe housing insecurity without the proper legislative protections in place.
