Mental health conditions are overdiagnosed, Streeting says
Briefly

Health Secretary Wes Streeting remarked on the issue of 'overdiagnosis' of mental health conditions during a BBC interview, stating that many individuals are being overlooked in the welfare system. He indicated that the government's upcoming welfare reforms aim to address this by tightening eligibility for benefits like Personal Independence Payments (PIP), while also committing to hiring more mental health professionals to decrease waiting times. Mental health charity Mind cautioned against stigmatization and emphasized the necessity of providing appropriate support for those experiencing mental health issues, highlighting the complex nature of mental wellbeing and the challenges in the benefit application process.
Applying for benefits is not an easy process. People with a mental health problem must go through a lengthy and arduous assessment process, with decisions to not provide them support affecting lives.
Mental wellbeing, illness, it's a spectrum and I think definitely there's an overdiagnosis but there's too many people being written off, and not getting the support they need.
