The UK government plans to extend statutory sick pay to over one million low-paid workers, allowing them to receive 80% of their weekly earnings from the first day of illness. This move is aimed at ensuring no one has to choose between their health and earning a living. However, unions are calling for this rate to be increased further. Critics from businesses warn that the changes may impact growth and employment, highlighting concerns over rising operational costs amid proposed updates to the Employment Rights Bill.
"No one should ever have to choose between their health and earning a living, which is why we are making this landmark change," said Liz Kendall, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.
TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: "This shouldn't be the end of the story. We urge ministers in future to raise the replacement rate for the lowest earners beyond 80% and undertake a wider review of the statutory sick pay rate."
