Shelter has criticized the UK government for delaying the implementation of Awaab's law, which mandates social landlords to quickly address dangerous housing hazards. Angela Rayner, the housing secretary, announced that landlords will have until 2027 to comply, a timeframe that Shelter deems unacceptable. The law is a response to the tragic death of Awaab Ishak due to mold exposure in 2020. Shelter's CEO, Polly Neate, emphasized the urgent need for immediate action to protect families from unsafe living conditions, highlighting the potential risks of the extended grace period for landlords.
Rayner said: We have a moral duty to ensure tragedies like the death of Awaab Ishak never happen again. Landlords cannot be allowed to rent out dangerous homes.
Polly Neate stated: Awaab Ishak's legacy must be that no other family has to witness poor housing conditions putting their child's life at risk.
